7 Flu-Fighting Foods

This year, drug makers expect to produce 140 million doses of vaccine, according to the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention. Below is a list of flu-fighting foods that can help in the prevention of the flu.

BLACK- EYED PEAS
These nutritious legumes are rich in zinc, a trace mineral that keeps your immune system in working order. Pinto beans, peanuts, roasted pumpkin seeds and wheat germs are other good choices.

TOMATOES
Vitamin C rich tomatoes help fight colds and flu by boosting the body’s natural defense system in the same way their citrusy relatives do. One medium tomato provides 40% of your daily vitamin C, so have a glass of tomato juice at lunch and treat yourself to pasta with a tomato sauce for dinner.

CARROTS
They are rich in beta-carotene which your body uses to ward off infections. Other good sources are dark green vegetables, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, and winter squash.

MUSHROOMS
These nutritional powerhouses heighten the body’s resistance to viral infections by increasing the activity of natural killer cells, a vital part of the immune system. They are also rich in selenium; low levels of this element have been linked with an increased risk of developing more severe flu.

TEA
Green, black and oolong tea all coontain naturally occurring compounds that reduce the risk of flu, including quercetin, a powerful antioxidant, and L-theanine, an amino acid found naturally only in tea. Decaffeinated teas also contain amino acid, but herbal teas do not.

ALMONDS
These popular nuts are a rich source of the antioxidant vitamin E, which helps your ward off viral infections. To maximize vitamin E absorption, opt for chopped almonds, almond butter or almond oil

YOGURT
Probiotics, the beneficial bacteria found in yogurt and other fermented foods, Strengthen the immune system. Not a fan of yogurt? Try cottage cheese, kimchi (a fermented Korean dish made of seasoned vegetables) or sauerkraut instead.

Secrets To Better Health

Here are a few phrases we have all heard: Motion is life. Attitude is everything. You are what you eat. Without music life would be a mistake. These are all true statements!

Concentrate on your health as opposed to losing weight. If you have kids, concentrate on your kids and how losing weight will help you improve the energy you bring to your relationship with them. Inches are always better to lose than weight.

Stay positive. Life is too short to beat yourself up over weight you have gained or workouts you have missed. Staying positive helps all areas of your life.

Have fun. If your work-outs are not fun you are not going to keep doing them. So, if you dread going to the gym, don’t go. Instead, go for a walk, play with your kids in the yard, etc. If you can turn the dreaded exercise word into fun, your chances of being successful will go up dramatically.

Don’t kick yourself when you are down. Concentrate on today and tomorrow. You can’t change the past, and beating yourself up is only going to drag you in the wrong direction. Today is a new day!

Do Interval Workouts 3 days per week. Intervals help you burn 30% more calories per workout and can help leave your metabolism elevated for up to 12 hours after each workout. New research suggest up to 48 hours.

Turn random acts into fitness. Take the stairs at work. Park in the furthest spot at the store or work. Play with your kids instead of sitting on the sidelines. Walk in place while brushing your teeth. Be creative and you can turn activities you already do into opportunities to improve your health.

Always eat breakfast and never skip meals. Drink a glass of water when you wake up and have breakfast within an hour of waking up to kick-start your metabolism. Skipping meals causes your metabolism to slow down and sends the signal to your body to store your next meal as fat in order to avoid starvation.

Drink 64 ounces of water per day plus additional ounce per minute of workout time. You should be going to the bathroom at least once every hour to hour and a half. ALWAYS AVOID SODA.

Eat something every 2 to 3 hours. Eat healthy snacks mid-morning and mid-afternoon to help keep your metabolism buzzing and to help you avoid over-eating at lunch and dinner. What is a healthy snack? Almonds, celery, good protein bar, cucumber, etc.

Control your portions. Avoid seconds and eat until you are no longer hungry versus until you are full. Drink a glass of water before you eat. This tricks your body into thinking it’s full.

Have a cheat day. But only if you are working out. This will help you stay on target.

You are what you eat. So eat healthy to be healthy.

It is estimated that at least half of the people in America do not meet their minimal recommended magnesium intake. Magnesium is an essential mineral for health, and is required for hundreds of anti-aging reactions. Interesting enough, there are many suffering from the following symptoms:

constipation

elevated blood pressure

elevated blood sugar levels

muscle cramps

wheezing (asthma)

heart arrhythmias

Adequate magnesium intake has also been shown to lower your risk for a stroke.

How do I get enough magnesium?

It is recommended that you consume at least 400 mg daily. You can get it from food and also supplementation. With busy schedules it may be easier to supplement.

Foods rich in magnesium include nuts and seeds, beans, whole grains and leafy green vegetables. Some examples are: Pumpkin and squash seeds have 151 mg in a 1 oz serving. Brazil nuts 1 oz. 107 mg. Oat or wheat bran 1 oz. 103 mg.

If you want to supplement, a good magnesium is important. Standard Process has a great product. You can get it at our office.

One word of caution, is that calcium blocks magnesium absorption. So if you are taking calcium you will need to take a 2:1 ratio of calcium to magnesium. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to call or come in to our office.

It isn’t man made, or baked or torched.

It comes from the Islands.

It is sweeter than any cookie and better for you than many other fruits.

Did you guess what it is?

Yes, it is the pineapple! And you are probably making a mistake picking it out. The Ripeness has nothing to do with color, green or gold. It has everything to do with smell. Smell the Base of the pineapple. You want a light pineapple fragrance. Then pull on a green leaf, if it comes out easy the pineapple is ready to eat. So if you have a sweet tooth, eat some pineapple. It has half the glycemic level of a cookie and tastes great. Plus it has an incredible anti-inflammatory enzyme bromelain. So instead of reaching for that candy bar, reach for some pineapple.

How Do Toxins Create Fat?

Once in your body, toxins do four things that help manufacture fat:

1. Slow down your metabolism.
2. Decrease your body’s ability to burn fat.
3. Slow down the time it takes for you to feel full (this is called the satiety response time).
4. Traps fat in the body. Defense system. Fat surrounds toxins that it can’t expel out of the body.

The problem is, your body simply wasn’t built to deal with the toxins that you are constantly being bombarding with in today’s world. This has never before occurred in the history of the human race. Our Body is being bombarded with Toxins every day. From the air we breathe, to the water we drink (not to mention all the soda, energy drinks, diet drinks etc.), Water we bathe and shower in, food we eat. Processed food is a killer. It seems that everything we do has chemicals in them, from shampoo and soap to diet drinks with aspartame and lotions, lawn care, etc. Our bodies can’t combat all the man- made chemicals that we use.

What is the Answer?

Would we put our head in the sand or say YOLO? No ,there are some great ways to help Detox the body.

Watch what you are putting in your mouth.

Whole foods are best. Food in its natural form is great for the body. Example, an apple, or cucumber.

Reverse Osmosis for drinking water. Research has shown that RO is one of the best ways to purify your water.

Avoid Chemicals such as Aspartame, High fructose Corn syrup, and the millions used in processed food.

Detox

It is very important to do a detox/cleanse periodically.

There are good and not so good ways to do it.

In our office, we can help you with a cleanse that is right for you and your body. i. Example: Total Tea, Liver Detox, Nulean, Standard Process 21 day Cleanse, homeopathies and more.

After a cleanse you may notice: Less sugar cravings, more energy, better digestion, less brain fog, less
headaches, overall feeling of well being and health.

Australian researchers gave 1,650 back-pain sufferers a daily dose of acetaminophen (the generic drug Tylenol is made of) or a placebo for four weeks. The acetaminophen worked no better than the fake pills to reduce pain. The drug is a first-line treatment for back pain, but there’s no evidence it provides more relief than the natural recovery process, explains study author Chris Williams, noting that drugs such as ibuprofen have not been studied. “That can be reassuring for patients, though. If they don’t rest in bed, and try to maintain normal activity, they’re very likely to recover quickly.” Men’s Journal Oct. 2014

SALT LAKE CITY — A new kind of “mommy medicine” is raising eyebrows.

From essential oils to infant massage, more moms are giving alternative medicine a try. Here’s another option we’re hearing a lot about: women taking their babies to the chiropractor.

Baby Milo had his first chiropractic visit when he was 5 months old.

“He had breast-feeding issues and I also noticed that one side of his head was balding,” Milo’s mother said.

Infant chiropractic isn’t new, but now that the “mommy pipeline” has gone viral, more moms are turning to this alternative method to deal with common childhood illnesses, and they are touting the benefits on blogs and Facebook posts for other moms to see.

They have heard from other moms that it’s helped their children in breast-feeding issues, colic, digestive problems, ear infections, allergies and asthma.

Salt Lake City chiropractic physician Shannon Parisi said many infant and childhood issues can clear up when the body is functioning better, but she stops short of saying there is a direct correlation.

“We don’t claim to treat any of those issues. We just want to clear out their nervous system, so that they’re going to function properly,” she said.

And Parisi points out that infant adjustments aren’t like adult adjustments.

“Adjusting an infant’s neck is literally like gently pushing on a peach and not putting a dent,” she said.

Critics say there is no scientific evidence infant chiropractic works but Milo’s mother said personal experience is all the proof she needs.

“Within weeks we started noticing his hair was growing back and as far as breast-feeding equally on both sides, he had full range of motion,” she said.

Several local pediatricians declined to comment on the chiropractic practice.

Information provided by the American Academy of Pediatrics says further studies are needed to determine the costs, benefits and safety.
